Backyard Greenhouse Planning: From Meadow to Sanctuary
Nestled in an open meadow surrounded by pines and oak brush sits the 18’ Growing Dome of Wanda and Angelo. This backyard greenhouse has become more than a garden; it is a sanctuary for plants, family, and quiet reflection.
Choosing the Right Spot for a Backyard Greenhouse
Selecting the site for the greenhouse came easily. The property’s former owner had maintained an outdoor garden in the meadow, leaving behind the remnants of raised beds and layers of deer fencing. Those signs told Wanda and Angelo two things: the spot received plenty of sunlight, but it also attracted plenty of wildlife.
To be sure, they used a solar pathfinder app to track the sun’s movement across the horizon and throughout the seasons. The results confirmed it. The meadow was the perfect place for their backyard greenhouse.
Preparing a Backyard Greenhouse for Success
Once the site was chosen, the focus turned to preparation. Because the dome sits in an open meadow, one of the biggest concerns was critters making themselves at home inside. Rodent protection was a top priority, along with installing a weed barrier to keep roots and weeds from invading future garden beds. With these safeguards in place, the backyard greenhouse would have a solid foundation.

From Plans to Backyard Greenhouse
With the groundwork complete, a Growing Spaces crew arrived to construct the 18’ Growing Dome. They added corrugated metal garden beds, filled first with a base layer of amended mulch for drainage and then topped with Paonia Soil.
Wanda was careful not to rush planting. She wanted the backyard greenhouse to be fully secure before introducing anything living. She added a Costco screen door, vent screens, and additional rodent protection around the base. Only when everything felt truly safe did she prepare to welcome her first plants.
Tomatoes with a Tale
The first plants in the backyard greenhouse arrived with a story. A friend gifted Wanda two heirloom Roma tomato seedlings in Dixie cups, which were gifted to her as seeds by another friend. Wanda was reluctant to take them because she and Angelo were leaving for a trip. But the tomatoes traveled along, from Colorado to Arizona, where Wanda’s mother babysat them on a windowsill until they could be brought home and planted. You may have heard of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, but traveling tomatoes? This might be a first!
On Father’s Day weekend, the seedlings were finally placed in the soil. Within months, the plants thrived and set fruit. Now Wanda waits with anticipation for them to ripen. She saved one that was ready until we arrived, and it was the size of her hand!

A Garden of Variety
The tomatoes were only the beginning. Soon cucumbers, summer squash, beans, nasturtiums, hanging baskets, rainbow chard, and herbs filled the Dome. Of course, gardening brought challenges too. Powdery mildew appeared on the cucumbers, but instead of pulling them out, Wanda trimmed away damaged leaves and let the plants keep growing. To her delight, the cucumbers continued producing.

Her backyard greenhouse became a place of trial, error, and small victories, each plant teaching something new.
Lessons in Gardening and Balance
No gardener can expect a completely pest or disease-free environment. Wanda has come to understand that tending a backyard greenhouse is about balance. Some pests will appear. Some plants will struggle. The goal is to manage what you can, accept what you cannot, and keep trying new approaches when the first ones don’t succeed.

A Sanctuary in the Meadow
For Wanda, the Dome is more than a place to grow food. It’s a sanctuary. A quick 15-minute visit often turns into hours, lost in the quiet rhythm of gardening. If Angelo can’t find her, he knows exactly where to look—inside their backyard greenhouse, where she tends her plants, her peace, and her joy.
