Growing Dome Greenhouse Foundation Options

There are a few greenhouse foundation options available for Growing Spaces Growing Dome® greenhouses. The primary purpose of creating a greenhouse foundation is to anchor the greenhouse securely to the ground. The above-ground pond is bolted to the foundation wall, which further aids in the anchoring process.

A complex greenhouse foundation will significantly increase the overall cost of your project, so simpler options are recommended unless other important factors come into play. When choosing a greenhouse foundation, consider the following factors:

  • Greenhouse building codes: Growing Dome greenhouses are designed for agricultural use. Some building departments waive permits and permanent foundation requirements for these greenhouses, while others are stricter. This is crucial if you’re consulting with your building department for installation.
  • Termites: In Southern climates, termites can necessitate a concrete foundation with a termite barrier. Our greenhouse kits include a pressure-treated lumber bottom plate and Pro-Wood siding, both of which are termite-resistant.
  • Severe winds and/or snow loads: In areas with heavy snowfall or extreme wind conditions, our geodesic greenhouses, while strong in design, benefit from a concrete foundation.
  • Frost damage: In areas with severe frost penetration, Growing Domes on a low-cost foundation may move due to frost/thawing. However, our rigid greenhouse kits usually don’t experience issues. Also, our foundation has an insulated frost barrier with the option to add exterior perimeter insulation, and the soil inside the greenhouse remains warmer than outside conditions.

In this option, the Growing Dome greenhouse is situated on a circular ring or pad of compacted gravel. Horizontally installed polystyrene foam board insulation serves as a skirt, resting against the bottom of the greenhouse wall, and is subsequently covered with gravel. All Growing Spaces greenhouses come with their own foundation wall as part of the kit.
