Selecting the Perfect Site to Build Your Greenhouse

Building a Growing Dome® greenhouse is an exciting venture that can transform your backyard into a thriving hub of fresh produce. When selecting a site to build a greenhouse, buyers must consider several critical factors to ensure optimal plant growth and ease of maintenance.

A well-chosen location can enhance the efficiency and productivity of your greenhouse, while a poor choice can lead to challenges such as insufficient sunlight or difficult access. This guide will explore the essential considerations for site selection to help you make an informed decision.

Solar Horizon and Sunlight Exposure

For optimal performance, solar greenhouses should receive unrestricted sunlight from the south, east, and west, with a preference for south-facing exposure. A solar pathfinder can be a valuable tool for assessing sunlight patterns.

If your site receives excessive summer sun, consider a location with deciduous trees nearby to provide shade during warmer months while allowing sunlight in winter. A minimum of 4 to 5 hours of clear sun per day is recommended for effective greenhouse operation, though auxiliary heating in the winter may be necessary in areas with less sunlight

Proximity to Dwelling

Building your greenhouse close to your home offers convenience, making it easier to access fresh produce and manage utilities such as power and water. It also simplifies snow removal and maintenance tasks during harsh weather conditions.

Utilities and Power Supply

While Growing Domes can function without electricity or water lines, installing these utilities can enhance convenience. Smaller domes feature solar-powered fans and water features, while larger ones have 110V fans that can be upgraded to solar options. Dedicated electricity can also power auxiliary heating systems, though propane is a popular choice for its CO2 benefits. The downside of propane heaters can be increased moisture and condensation.

Water supply can be managed with polyethylene pipes, which can freeze and thaw without rupturing. Plants can also be watered directly from the above-ground pond. In the winter, the pond can be topped off once a month or so as needed since plants' water demands are typically lower. Hand-watering and solar-powered irrigation systems are alternative options to running a dedicated water line.
